Well, what a ride this has been! On June 1, 1985, Darlene opened the doors of the very first location of Quality Sewing Machine Center. That first location was in the Northgate Shopping Center, next door to what is now Minuteman Press. The grand total of the area in that store was a whopping 312 square feet!
In October of 1987, John joined Darlene full-time, and they have worked side by side every day for the 30 years since, a noteworthy accomplishment that not many couples anywhere can claim!
In 1989, Quality Sewing Center moved across the parking lot to the former Carpetland building, where it resided for the next eight years, starting with about 2200 square feet and eventually expanding to 4400.
In 1997, because of the negotiations between the city of Rochester and the DM&E Railroad, Quality Sewing Center moved to Barlow Plaza, and their former home in Northgate Plaza was demolished for the construction of the 16th Avenue NW extension, which we are all still waiting for!
In the early part of this century, we tried our hand at retirement, an adventure that did not work out favorably for our customers. In 2008, we faced the choice of seeing our life's work closing up, or jumping back in the pool and resume paddling!
In retrospect, we both feel that we made the best decision!
In 2012, exactly two months shy of our 27th Anniversary, we moved to Northwest Plaza (Sam’s Club shopping center) and the opening of our fourth location on April 2, 2012!
More space - 5200 square feet, more parking - virtually unlimited versus 51 spaces shared with five other storefronts, easier access - Highway 52, 55th ST, West Circle Drive, etc., and a whole lot more!
